5 Things to Watch to Scratch Your Travel Bug Bite

Between lockdown and quarantines, travel has definitely become more difficult & even impossible for some.

Here’s a few things to watch to put your mind somewhere else in the world!

Tracks

Why: Perfect movie if you’ve been feeling a little tired of your routine, have ever identified as an introvert, or just want to learn some crazy stuff about Australia you might not know. Plot: Adapted from a book, it’s the true story of a woman who decided to change her life and set off on a journey across the Australian desert. She wants to get away from the loud, obnoxious world and do something not many like her have done. The feels in this film revolve around loss, finding bravery, and creating connections you may have never known you needed.

(p.s. Adam Driver is the supporting actor in this film and he’s dorky but adorable)

House Hunters International

Why: This show is a much lighter option for days you’re maybe burnt out and just want something to lift your spirits. Watch this and make dinner, or play on your phone while kinda’ watching it (you know). Plot: I don’t really dig the original House Hunters, but I like this version because it gives the viewer a little sense of what it’s like to move abroad. With such a variety of home types, architecture, and quirks you probably wouldn’t see normally, this show will make you more curious about the differences (and similarities) between homes in all parts of the world. There’s little things I’ve noticed that are common other places, like the laundry being in the kitchen (not a norm in the US). I see bigger variations too, like the toilet being in the shower. Watching this you find out quickly “normal” is very relative. See how everyone’s wants vary and some changes can be a good thing. Also there’s 166 seasons so it’ll just keep playing until you’re asked the lovely “Are you still watching?”.

Everything Is Illuminated

Why: Humor, spontaneity, and deep, raw emotion – Everything Is Illuminated has A LOT going for it. It’s a great watch if you’re interested in genealogy (studying your lineage). Plot: Elijah Woods plays an eccentric man who wants to know more about his Jewish family in Ukraine. He goes on a tour of the country guided by a reserved grandfather and his outgoing grandson who both have secrets of their own. This film feels so human and real, even with its cartoonish qualities. It really makes you think more about the obvious, yet often overlooked, fact that we exist today solely because many existed before us. -Adapted from a novel written by Jonathan Safran Foer

Anthony Bourdain – No Reservations

“Anthony Bourdain quotes to remember the legendary chef” The Chive

Why: People close to me are probably sick of me comparing everything to an episode of Anthony Bourdain I watched.. BUT how can I not talk about the guy. (RIP to one of the greatest authors, journalists, chefs, tv personalities ever) The places he goes and topics he discusses can really open your eyes, as he keeps you drawn in with his never ending curiosity and charming, hilariously blunt, personality. Plot: There’s so much – From the private lives of rock stars like Queens of the Stone Age, to some real unbelievable struggles, like those the Kurds face to protect their culture and lives in northern Iraq. If you’d like to learn more about the world in an up-close and personal way, have dinner one night with Tony.

Into the Wild

Why: In your life have you ever asked “Why am I doing this?” or “What’s the point?” You will never forget this movie, whether you decide you like it or not. It’s one film I think everyone should see, and I say this because it asks some hard, but extremely important questions about life. Also, the cinematography is so BREATHTAKING, it makes me feel humbled the Earth even allows us to live here. Plot: It’s the true story of a once over achieving college student, Chris McCandless, who decides to drop everything to hitchhike the most remote parts of the United States. In his search for solitude through the American southwest to Alaska, he coincidentally learns about people and how important community is. If you watch anything on this list, watch this!

Into the Wild was originally a novel written by John Krakauer.

His House Bonus Horror/Thriller!

Why: Definitely a unique story in the haunted house genre, His House showcases how the supernatural and the human psyche can become a formidable team. Plot: This film follows a couple that has traveled a horrendous, sadly probably not uncommon, path from Sudan to a run-down English suburb. It dives into some deep topics and real life horrors happening in the world. It’s not your typical horror flick because it has a much bigger story to tell about the lives of Sudan refugees and how far some people have gone to find peace. If you don’t mind a few jump scares (or enjoy them) go watch this movie for yourself! I know it’s the best Netflix original I’ve watched.

You’re welcome! Now you don’t have to search for hours trying to find something to watch tonight. Hope these picks will keep you occupied until you can explore again!

Thx for reading & stay safe!
